Hi all,

I am B.E. graduate and have number of years of experience in IT field. Due to personal issues, I am unable to continue in my career. For my love towards books/reading, I am looking at pursuing BLIS and MLIS from IGNOU and hopefully build a career as a librarian in a time frame of 3-4 years.
I am not confident on this prospectus, as I am not aware of current value of this degree and market situation.
Could you please guide me if I could go ahead with BLIS degree as a start?

Many thanks in advance!!!

Thanks,
Namitha

Dear Namitha,

Before selecting library science please check following point.

a) What is your age, If you are 35 years old and belong to general category  then you can not apply for many government jobs and library professionals are getting good salary in only and only in govt. Jobs.

b) If you are average student then do not select this because you have to clear NET or  Phd for good job.

c) It also depends on which city you belongs and are you ready to go any where in india for jobs.

I hope you already read all point given by other library professionals. It is very easy to get good job and salary in library field. Age factor is also important for you.

Dear Ms. Namitha Holla,

Thanks for your post and your interest in Library profession.

As you understand that it is a professional course, people undergoes this course for getting service. This is hard reality. So your love  for books and reading etc. will not matter much in practical sense!! I am sorry if  my comments appear harsh to you  or hurt your consensus but they are what I realised from my experience in this profession.

My very first comment is that this profession is rather over crowded and thus you have to struggle to land you a job & establish yourself.

I have gone through the other posts and I am sure you could realise the pros and cons.of this profession and especially, the age factor. As an IT professional, of course you have some distinct advantages which will certainly keep you ahead among other job seekers ( in general as well as certain specific kind of organizations) but in the long run that will not suffice for sure!!There are several other issues or knowledge domains for senior professionals to become successful.

Besides, practically speaking, the distance mode of education is not perceived as equal to class room teaching by many organizations. So if you choose this profession, you should better have mental preparation to start your career with this issue. I have mentioned this particularly because your background is other than Humanities/Social Sciences. Many National Research Laboratories and other organizations openly advertise for applications from professionals passing out through regular courses.

Librarianship is a profession of diverse possibilities. It enables you to start afresh in a new domain some of which are extremely promising & prospective in terms of professional achievements; while some will enable you to have a very generous pay packet with very low points of professional satisfactions.

As such, you can well understand the (market) situation of Librarianship as a professional Course. Now, coming to the issue in terms of pay package, as a new entrant with B.Lib. Sc. a Technical Assistant in Central Govt office in A1 class cities earns around Rs. 35000/- P.M as a starting salary.

It seems to be a generous pay package for a 25 year old new comer in the profession. However, at age of 35+,  it does not look so attractive!! Unfortunately because of this OVER POPULATION of Library professionals (which is largely due to distance mode of education) the possibility of getting the pay scale at 25 Years is very very remote. so one has to elapse 4, 5 and even TEN invaluable years of life to land a job with this pay package. With applied assessment criteria, after at least 17 years of service one gets Rs. 60,000+ P.M. It is somewhat acceptable in early 40's but it seems rather pathetic for a 50+ individual. So one has to change two to three services at least by next 10 years to make it sort of decent (like 85K to 1.15 Lakhs) as of now.

I have narrated the financial issue as people opt for the professional courses to make a living and the state-of-the art picture of LIS profession.

I hope my statements will not appear irrelevant to you.

Sincerely

Siddhartha S. Ray
