Dear Mr. Singh,

first of all you arrange the library in such a that the students can reach easily to the required books/documents, make display and put it in the  library eg. quotations, authors name and photo, put some hanging that it can make better place.

Hope you will find the below links useful..

good,

In my opinion "Inculcation of Reading Habits among Students should be the top priority". It is followed by orientation programs to new students. Effective and user/students friendly Reference, Circulation, Book/Magazine Reviews services may attract students. Use of Automation and activity based library periods along with display of educational slogans and posters of eminent personalities may be fruitful..... etc.... Rajesh Sharma

Hello Suman

I would like to congrats you of asking such question who is taking active interest in reader's interest & proper utilization of their valuable time. I may have some suggestions which may help to you.

1) First of all whatever the reading materials(i.e Reference Books, Text Books, Periodicals, Journals, Magazines, Newspaper,Audio-Visual Materials, Research Thesis & Dissertations, Online Database, etc.)  is available in the library should be well organized & classified.

2) Proper Bay Guides should be there to reach every collection without any difficulties.

3) Whatever Library Services is provided that should be based on User-Friendly Principle with meeting the basice rules & guidelines of the library.

4) Library Orientation Programme is very beneficial to make aware the new library user that what resources & Services are available in the library & how to utilize them?

5) The standardized National, International, Daily Local Newspaper & general magazines with Competitive Collection should make available as per your Institutes Contribution fund availability & demands.

6) Proper neat & Cleanness of Library, every corner of the library should be maintained.

7) So many other systems are there which will attract all category of users to the library & that depends on the Institute's cooperation.

Dear Sri Suman Singh;

Thanks for your post and for addressing by far the most ethical and important issue in the profession. In the present day, we often notice comparative less foot fall in the Libraries in comparison to what it was, say 30 years ago. Well,  there is no denying that the Internet and computerization have drastically changed the concept of information collection, analysis, handling and delivery and the roles of Library professional has undergone a sea-change.

I have gone through all the 7 earlier posts from people presumably of different ages ( as I understood from the thumb nailed pics)and most likely from different professional attachment. I am extremely happy as I found that your query haunted them too. (I have no hesitation to confess that what most of us, the senior professionals are leaving as virasat to the young generation is a very gloomy image of the profession as most of us just passed our time without doing justice to our duties, made virtually nothing or very little significant things for the profession and the present scenario of users' attitude & impact  towards most of the libraries and subsequently to the profession are mostly because of such reasons!!)

Well, there is no avail of indulging to mud throwing. Let us concentrate to the issue you have mentioned.

First and foremost thing is to make the students or users believe that they will get HELP from the Library.

I fully agree with what other LIS Link members commented, especially what Ms. Dharitri Mallick has mentioned categorically & especially in #3 & #4.

From my experience I have seen that if you can gain confidence of the user that you have a open mind to help him/her with whatever resources you have, it certainly leaves a lasting impression in their mind.

Next is the attraction. It largely depends upon the nature of collection but again I repeat, a lot more depends upon the cordial and friendly attitude of the library personnel and their knowledge.

I still remember the advise of a Doctor in my earliest part of professional life when I joined a esteemed Teaching hospital of a Philanthropic Organization as librarian. I was fresh from the University and all my knowledge (what ever it was) was out & out theoretical and pathetically un-befitting  for a Medical Librarian. The Library was at the 5th. floor and the very renowned and well established doctor summoned me to Ground Floor at the outdoor and told me openly, Librarian in this place does not mean to simply stay into the library at the 5th. Floor. You must be knowing what WE REQUIRE!! See what sort of patients I am treating and try to accumulate literature pertinent to them. I was completely baffled as I knew nothing of Medical Science as such with my academic background in Science which unfortunately was pathetically miniscule. There, on that very day, right on the spot I heard about key words (in practical sense)!!

Extremely insulted& frustrated, me went back to the Library started browsing the index ( I knew that they are Tertiary Information Sources!!) wrote down the article references in a piece of paper and collected as many host materials ( I knew the terminologies as we were taught these in the Class!) I could identify; kept them marked with page marking slips. After about three hours the Doctor came with a couple of his house staffs hanging around him and asked for the materials. I  pointed to a small pile of materials and handed him the piece of paper containing the references. A miracle happened. He came to me and deeply hugged me (I fully remember it till today, it was so tight that I almost suffocated!!). and exclaimed Yess. We need this service. the more you do, more you will learn and more compliments you will receive. Incidentally, a year & half later when I approached for study leave to undergo M.LI.Sc, the Doctors were the people who put their full weight  in my favour!!

I have narrated the very personal incident only to highlight that a librarian MUST have the confidence of his/her patrons. This is the most vital things.

Internet and Computers are not capable to provide say, more than 60% of the users' need. We have to supplement those vital 40%.  And this 40% is so vital that the users' always zealously awaits such supports. Library Professionals have to be much much more proactive and innovative and that is the most important issue to attract the users as I believe.

Sincerely,

Siddhartha s. Ray Calcutta
