Dear Professionals
In India Library profession is in very poor position due useless work and internal corruptions mostly jobs are in pending position and nobody taking care for active selection. Many states has Library Legislation Act but there is no proper response, mostly state Governments ruling are dead and inactive position for library profession. In library Sr. Positions are very negative with development progress of staff and completely failed in profession progress. Library profession is very unsatisfactory, it is true mostly peoples are doing different kind of works after having library degree because they getting more comparatively library jobs.

I agree with Dr. Pachauri, not only organisational but also professional change> ........
I remember quotation Charles Darwin"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change."
change according to users needs, change according to information storage media> Tablets to Tablet.
I am agree with you and i think we should try very truly for it otherwise our profession will be more and more poor.
I would like suggest some of the points> for professional development >
Mr. Mallikarjun, I am totally agree with your third point.
Give the representations (through professional associations) to the regulatory bodies(AICTE,INC,IMC,UGC,HRD, CBSE, NCTE etc) to recruitment of qualified librarians and standardization of professional designations. They should also look-after the pay scales, working conditions and selection in private organisations.
vijay sir our profession is not poor ...don't worry
I know very well.... our profession is very good and reach. I am proud of myself because i am a Librarian. But I saw mostly library professionals are facing problems not only private institutes in govt institutes also specially related to salary and most important thing is our respect.
Dear Sri Mukesh Bharti,
The issue you have addressed is extremely important as our existence is at stake! However, as I feel, before making others responsible, we should first look at ourselves. What we, as a professional do significantly? How many of us can claim that s/he is so inherent part of his/her library that users throng to him/her library because of his/her personal charisma? I know many people will say that it is a team work. Sure it is a team work but personal competencies only makes an individual jewel in the crown!
Yes, I admit there are both advantages and flaws in government rules. A College Librarian gets UGC pay scales but a Medical College Librarian is denied of it. Does anybody believe that the job of a college Librarian is more advanced or sophisticated and complicated than that of a Medical College Librarian? Here some of our friends are getting advantage of government rules and some are recipients of flaws of government rules.
The roles of Library associations are rather insignificant. But do they really have any legal/official powers to exert? the answer is a simple NO. They can certainly recommend some thing but can not make it enacted !! Of course thgere is no denying that they should have taken much much more proactive roles especially on issues where the government has taken some forward steps. The Central government has made gradation of Libraries and fixed pay scales for librarians of various categories of Libraries.. The Library associations should have come forward for structuring of staff pattern for each categories of libraries but no library association ever took the issue seriously. I personally feel that all of them did injustice to the profession for which young people are being heavily suffered.
I completely agree with Dr. Pachury's opinion about regulatory body for LIS profession. Until and unless an empowered body is there, there will be very little development in the profession. As I see to day many young people are working as contractual staff and we often talk big about morality, ethics and motivation. But how can one even imagine for such issues if his/her position is not confirmed? If a person remains constantly worried about her continuation and is on the look out for a job, how can one expect motivation/ ethics etc from his/her?. Libraries with such stuffs can never achieve desired success as one can never make any long term planning banking upon such often mobile staff.
At the same time, it is also a true fact that majority of the professional have come to this profession as an alternative selection! people have their choice of profession from young age. Some want to be teacher, some Doctor, some Engineer while some want to be Govt. officer or Pilot etc. but can any of us (except a few exceptions for obvious reasons) can tell from the deep core of their hearts that his/her dream has been to be a LIBRARIAN? I believe that the poor state of the profession is hidden in the answer.
