M.L.I.Sc. Degree holder appplying for Library Attendent?

With the lack of opportunities for the freshers in our profession, M.L.I.Sc. Degree holders now have to apply for the post of Library Attendant which can be done even by unqualified staff. To me i think this happen because of the over employment of unqualified senior staff in many of the Library. It's time we Library professional become more selective to who will be employed and will do the work. Innovation in Library comes with an up-to-date knowledge of the development, which senior unqualified (no Library degree) library staff do not have.

Good thought we shud share with Badan barman and Kamaljeet Kaur to mobilize LIS/agitation .

it's a gud question for freshers...

The senior library professionals, in other words fathers and mothers of our profession should take care of the freshers i.e. their children in our professions, so that freshers have good opportunity to work. Why use unqualified staff when their are lots of qualified candidate?

Most of the time, freshers are running after job, not caring about the status.

@sharmila why do frehsers not care about the status of the jobs? what do you think? what can be the reason, according to you?

sharmila mam, i agree with u

Dear Sri Jo tonXing,

Thanks for your post and addressing a very serious issue.

Unfortunately, everybody is beating around the bushes.

In government sectors, there are promotional avenues and as a staff with certificate degree in Library science joins in the entry level post, s/he becomes eligible for higher promotional grades. After , say fifteen years, s/he attains the scale of Sr. Library Assistant. Now the question is whether the promotion system to be abolished? If yes, the professional candidates joining at the entry level post of Jr. Library assistant will remain in the same cadre! How do you feel about it??

Never-the-less as per Govt rules, vacancy arises only at the initial post of the incumbents. Like, as I mentioned above, when the above incumbent retires ( as a Sr. Library Assistant or even in higher Pay Scale), the vacancy will arise to his/her initial post; that is, in the pay scale of the post where s/he first joined and not at the pay scale/post s/he enjoyed during his/her retirement.

Every week I see posts complaining about very meagre salary for qualified staff and all.

May I ask you a simple question? if YOU get a worker in cheap rate shall you ever come forward to pay higher price for the same work? This is exactly what is happening in our profession. I am sure, if the pass outs are restricted to 500 per year, within late next decade you will find that professionals are getting quite good salary. If there is scarcity of qualified staff, then the salary will automatically go up. I am telling you from my personal experience when I joined ICMR in 80s, I was the only person in all ICMR institutes with M.L.I.Sc. qualification and as I can recall, in those days there was NOT A SINGLE UNEMPLOYED M.L.I.Sc. in West Bengal; while the number is a few hundreds at present.

I am sorry to say that I do not share the thoughts of Sri Santosh as I believe that mobilizing agitation, the problem will not solve the problem

I believe that I could explain the root cause of the problem.

Dear Siddhartha Shankar Ray thank you for the comment, i believe it's true. Let me still try to put a but hehe, if an MLISc degree holder apply a Library attendant jobs, won't it be some kind of exploitation to our profession? or are you ok with this thought.

Dear Sr Jo tonXing,

Thanks for your post and replying back after two months. I presume that this period might have given you  ample opportunities to do an intrinsic study of the prevailing situation. It is quite painful and shameful as well to see qualified personnels working in posts which are not befitting to his/her qualification. But it is equally true that with the ever increasing number of pass-outs, the days are not far when even Ph.D degree holders too will apply for Library Attendant's job. Of course this is a blatant example of exploitation but it is also the basic theory of Market if supply surpasses demands, the cost falls.Till there will be plenty of professionals in relation to actual requirements, such things will continue.

Siddhartha S Ray, Calcutta

Thank you for the comment, 'if supply surpasses demands, the cost falls'  i think this time will be coming very soon. So, there is no post too small....
