Six Sigma

Developed by Motorola, Six Sigma is a business management strategy that seeks to improve the quality process output by identifying and removing the causes of errors. It focuses on improvement of organisational performance.

It uses a set of quality management methods including statistics methods to create special infrastructure of people within the organisation.

Six sigma methods

There are two methods used:

DMAIC

The DMAIC is used to develop/improve existing practices.

It methodology has five phases:

  • Defining the problem,
  • Measuring important aspects,
  • Analyzing the information flow,
  • Improving and
  • Controlling.

DMADV

The DMADV is used to devise/design an error free procedure.

It also features five phases:

  • Defining goals,
  • Measuring characteristics,
  • Analyzing,
  • Designing details,
  • Verifying.

In nutshell it may be said that Six Sigma is a:

  1. Metric
  2. An improvement methodology
  3. A management philosophy
  4. A strategy to running the business
  5. A way to create a common standard to the entire organisation
  6. And also a method to train people within organisation.

Application of Six Sigma to LIS

  • Ø Technical section (acquisition, classification, cataloguing )
  • Ø Services to users (charging& discharging, CAS, SDI, E-mail, ask-a-librarian, etc.)
  • Ø Marketing of information sources and services
