Do Most of the institutes prefer men at work as librarian rather than women?

Organizations look for male candidates for the librarian post. What are the reasons behind considering mostly men as best to handle the administrative works than a woman?

Well I dont think so. This criteria doesn't exist. The selection, if it is fair, is done only on merit, may be a female or male. Have you ever come across such statement by any authority?

I went across such type of statement and that's why i have posted it. Although there is no such criteria in selection but somewhere the administrative body wants male candidates at work thinking that they can devote more time to the institute than a woman.

Some institutions prefer male staff due to late working hours of library, because they know no woman would like to work in late hours

Dear Kankana

I had seen the other side of the coin, I feel females devote more time than males but yes some exceptions are there. These exception only put pressure for not preferring girls.

Sorry,

Dr. Vijay Raghav Tiwari

I dont agree with you.

from my personal experience, i can say that females are reluctant to spend more time in office.

however they have some other responsibilities at home,

but still females are less devoted to profession..............

Mr. Majumdar,

How can you say that women are less devoted to the profession? What about Chanda Kauchar, Indira Gandhi? Actually, women come outside the house for the work very lately. If they begun work or educated right from the begining just like male, the situation would be different. So think, before saying anything.

Dear Apurba, I think Sunita Pareek is right. The following two sentences cannot be applied to each and every females.

Females are reluctant to spend more time in office.

Females are less devoted to profession.

I am talking about library professional, not all lady.............

i had no intemsion to hurt females.

they are equally compatible as males.

but in case of out put in library, the result is not satisfactory......

you can visit nay library of india. in most of the cases the fact is same

Dear Majumder,

You are very correct regarding almost 80 to 90% female library professionals in case of output in library. This is same in maximum cases.I have also same experience as you do. what you are trying to say I understand though there is less numbers who are very much serious in allotted job. http://pkthakuria@gmail.com

Yes. Many organizations prefer male librarians and it’s like preferring females for the reception desk!

* Males don’t have any restriction of time hours. They can work late in night if needed. In case of women the security becomes an issue.

* Many libraries only have a single staff. In such situation the physical work (shifting of books, stack, etc) can be better handle by a male librarian than a female one.

* If the administrator appoints the female candidate they should be ready for maternity leaves, and others that are associated with females. But in case of a single handed library, the organization cannot afford it so they like to appoint the male candidates.

I agree and also face same problem many times
Yes, Kankana , I have gone through same experience 4 years ago when I was selected in IIT as Jr. Libraray Asst. my boss later on told me that they were looking for male candidate as there are shift duties ( night duties ) in IIT library.........................and I also agree that the most people think that men can handle administrative work more efficiently than women.
