Yes, it is 100% true that the Computer Professionals are taking IT related library positions. But you know, we are the one to be blamed for this. May be because of lack of awareness we do not have enough “System Librarians” globally. I know institutions in US and in UAE looking for System Librarians for more than a year and keep-on positing advertisements for these highly paid (US$70,000- 110,000 P.A ) positions. Senior Librarians should encourage the freshers to study the systems related courses so that in future we may have enough IT librarians in our community.
I also agree with Mr. Badan’s view saying that “the library professional should give much emphasis on emerging technologies”. This is a global problem! Here is a live example, an article published today in UAE based “The National” newspaper saying that a famous book seller has closed three of their branches in Dubai this year. This is the time for change! Let us move forward to accept the technology innovations such as IPAD, Kindle and Samsung Galaxy Tab which are highly expected to bring challenges for the book industry. Some of the well known publishers are already at work to channel their resources through these devices. Let us also join with them to serve our user community through these technology innovations.
