UGC NET is not Required for the Post of Assistant Librarian in University / College Librarian!

Today while browsing UGC NET Website for the notification of Next NET Examination, I observed a line which I dont think was there earlier. The line reads "National Eligibility Test - December, 2013  or Junior Research Fellowship and Eligibility for Assistant Professor".

Nothing is new in year and month as it is notification for December 2013. But the wording "eligibility for Assistant Professor" made me worried. What it is and why it is?
Whether NET is not necessary for Assistant Librarian or library professionals or Director of Physical Education Or the librarians are going to be designated as Assistant professor. I see very less chance of being designated as assistant professor. Then what it is? Whether we are going to loose academic status.
I can not deny the chances of some unpleasant news.

Is ILA sleeping ...................

Dear Pawan Agrawal you are misunderstanding the ugc net eligibility criteria ,in that ugc mention that net is exemption for  for Ph.D holders for Asst. Professor post.there u must understand what ugc given criteria

Dear User and Professionals,

UGC not mention Assistant Librarian eligibility, i mean Assistant Librarian should not qualify UGCNET. Other thing is lectureship designation earliest change in to Assistant Professor so that UGC mention new designation only, nothing is new or nothing is change.

i think.

It may be as the word Lecturership has been altered to "Assistant Professor" in the present context.

We were never Lecturership before too but we were placed in it.

I think the important thing is We need to appeal a fresh to place our designation at the right place.

Thanks Mr. Dersin Daimari, finally you have given the most appropriate answer to this misunderstanding spread among LIS professinals.

We should focus on re-designation of the Post of Librarian in academic libraries.

thanks

-I just want to know what the worst can happen if the librarians are not included in the teaching profession??????????

-have not you ever seen the way the conferences are going on????

-where is the quality of those papers?????????

-We the librarians compare ourselves with the ALA accredited degree holders those who are working in usa and canada  as academic librarians but can we compare our quality of correspondence and regular degrees with them????????If yes then why Indians library degrees are unable to qualify  with the accreditation process of USA and uk????????? why we are unable to get a job directly there if our degrees are equal with their degrees.

---For your information please i can tell you that ALA,AILA and CLIP are recognising each others degrees but why cant they validate or give recognition to our degrees?????????

------Probably after some time foreign universities (the bill already approved by mhrd) may enter into india .They may appoint librarians and professionals for teaching and working in  their institutions. But they are not yet recognised our degrees .They should not enter into our educational system without accrediting our degrees .

-----I request all of you to focus on this issue first.Probably this is an advance hidden policy of UGC to differentiate our degree and foreign degree . .

-----coming to the point of status I think we  are responsible for degrading our status.UGC is not responsible .UGC has certainly performed its task of maintaining quality in the higher education in our subject library science .

Assistant Professor and lecturer are academic/ teaching post, for that NET is there, while Assistant Librarian comes under Administrative Post. So experience and eligibility criteria should be different.

sorry, I am late to see the post and its comments. Dear friends, now there is absolutely nothing to worry about the UGC notification. The posting and the discussions are just the manipulations of fear generated in the hearts of librarians due to the recent UGC decisions against librarians. Now, UGC has only corrected the title of the test by changing the word "Lectureship" to "Asst. professor" as there is no lecturer today. The change had to be brought earlier since the change in designation of lecturers in 6th pay revision. Only dersin daimari  is right in the comments and others are mere emotional outbreaks and over thinking.

Dear SUNNY JOSEPH

Yes I am agree with you. It is also true that the doubts have raised due to recent decisions of the UGC. I have already told earlier perhaps in reply of some comment that I wish our doubts prove only doubt without converting into reality. you also pointed out correctly that this change should have been done long before. But after one negative decision this change has definitely raised some doubts.

The LIS profession has been undergoing several unpleasant phases for long. Librarians are struggling in India in every step..right from working positions to their status. But if we concentrate on the job profile of a librarian in abroad, we see that they are not only administer the library but also actively handling the teaching, learning and research matters. It's really embarrassing to see the volatile situation of the lis professionals struggling between teaching and non teaching related issues.

After going through the ugc site to verify the afore mentioned matter of assistant professor i noticed a point in the link http://ugcnetonline.in/eligibility.php , that "NET/SLET/SET shall remain the minimum eligibility condition for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professors in Universities/ Colleges/Institutions. Provided however, that candidates, who are or have been awarded a Ph. D. Degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009, shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professor or equivalent positions in Universities/ Colleges/ Institutions." From the last line of the above mentioned para, so far i understand that net is still an eligibility criteria for librarian. But It's very difficult to guess what ugc is planning for the librarianship for future.

This News is Not Good for our future generation. Library is a Main learning resource in education . If UGC  ignore this fact than it is Harmful to whole education system. Because after 50 years of our independence our

country is struggling for establish modern library system through out the country in all fields like USA and other western countries.

I am agree with Kankana B Badan's reference. I think It is fine for now... I am closing this discussion with the hope of best for the library professionals.....
