Dear all,
I am of the opinion that the present pattern of UGC NET examination has several inherent basic flaws and is therefore not a better asssessment or filtration system. It does not necessarily separate the wheat from the chaff.
Being an objective examination with no negative marking, the passing of the examination has become just a matter of chance and not necessarily that of intelligence. UGC has made a mockery of such an important examination as NET. In trying to simplify the examination, it has only diluted the process wherein any Tom, Dick and Harry can aspire to clear the same.
Earlier we had Descriptive pattern wherein - the ability of the students to express, analyse in depth and present the pros and cons of a topic, hold on to a argument, language and comprehension skills etc were tested. The candidates were tested in a credible crucible.
All that has gone now. Should we embrace such a system??

I also agree with Mr R.K.This new pattern demands deep and thorough study.Descriptive pattern can be biased it is not so with the Objective pattern.
I agree with R.K ji....
Only having deep knowledge does not lead to lectureship. Ability to give views, describe a situation, critical thinking are the most important part of research as well as lectureship. So, I think the previous descriptive pattern was better than present objective pattern. Only obstacle is availability of good evaluator for descriptive pattern. It should be taken care by UGC.
Moreover most of the candidates finished doing answer with in one & half hour instead of two and one hour in this time. It concludes that question pattern and level was not upto standard....................................
Sarvesh Sir,
I am not net qualified, the new pattern is very nice for me as a individual. But if I think as a professional it is not nice for the LIS PROFESSION. Sometimes as you say anybody with some practice of objective types questions or by good luck may clear the exam, without any theoretical or proper knowledge of the concept. In the descriptive question person will explain what he think about the concept and evaluate better then only by black the circle as in the new Patter.
So my view is against the new pattern, there should be negative marking and more than option can be correct or neither option is correct type questions as conducted by CSIR NET EXAM.
Thanks all who participate......
I absolutely support the opinion of Mr. Sarvesh. In case one can not write 300 words to analyze and explain certain issue, s/he is simply incompetent!.
But as the dilution goes on, especially in our profession, I am extremely afraid that soon we may be able to hire even book sorters with Doctorate Degrees.
I have just one question to all those who are advocating in favour of the objective type questions How many of you will be able to publish at least three articles in Standard Library Science journals out of your Ph.D theses?
I saw one comment about Lecturerership. My question is in case an individual can not explain & analyze an issue properly, how can s/he will be able to explain issues among his/her students? Please keep one thing in mind that things are getting complicated every day. Competitions are becoming tough to more tough everyday. 5-6 years ago we used to see a small percentage of doctorates as applicants in even the posts of University Librarians. Now we see majority of applicants with Doctorates in posts with grade pay Rs.5400. Naturally, recruiters had to adopt new criteria for screening of persons. we mostly see how many papers the individual has published during last 3 years, last 5 years and throughout his/her career and more importantly where they have been published? You know quality is the ultimate thing for assessment (unless influenced by other issues). in case a person has confidence upon him/herself and has quality s/he will not bother whether the question is objective type or descriptive. So my dear young professionals just be prepared to face the challenges of recruitment process and not keep yourself confined within the small arena of NET Questions and Ph.Ds. Sure, I appreciate your keen interest to be a doctorate. But please EARN it. and don't try to MANAGE it. The toughest test ahead is that of proper recruitment. Be worthy of it.Even in service life your depth of knowledge, clarity of vision will be appreciated not only by your seniors but also by your own junior colleagues.your entire professional life will be pathetic if you are stamped by your juniors as an incompetent professional.

Dear Sarvesh sir,
net exam is not a tiny thing, that any Tom, Dick & harry are able to qualify. Its a exam which shows the intellectual quality of the candidates, its an exam of the persons who have the depth knowledge of Library & Info Sc in each & every field .The new pattern is really fantastic, ur thinking is not correct that any bluff master can qualify the UGC net exam.
Absolutely write Your Design Mr. R.K.
in new pattern, with the help of luck it is not possible to get 75
Mr.Sarvesh you,re partially right. Because I,ve seen most of the students failed in third(III) paper but not in papre-I and II. But it may happen for only one or two question not for getting the qualifying marks. Finally a well prepared students will make it success at all.
present pattern is very good for experienced candidate. experience candidate have much knowledge for library profession. but old pattern discriptive type is helpful for fresher. they get only theortical knowledge. but experienced candidate have practical & deep knowledge for library profession. So UGC current pattern is very good.
