Libraries are less focused in any academic organisation. Why?

Respected Members ,

Many times i have found that libraries are not much considered as important sector in any academic institutes. There are much more interference of faculty member as in-charge. When librarian is already in professor scale, then why professor-in-charge needed? Please share your opinion.

Dear Sir,

its really a problem of our current education system, which is formulated by policy makers. So the system has to redefine.

it is the problem at the policy maker level...bt sir we will have to oppose at mass scale...........

Dear Sir,

Good Morning. Very good questions you have putforth infront of the forum. Eventhen nobody's bother about. Most of the self finance college are looking as an expenditure part rather than investment part. This is one reason. The second reason is that the college and university they are not producing quality librarian. The librarians are not equipped themselves to comete the faculty members in the particular college . The third reason is that many of the librarians complete their courses through correspodence. Those who did their course through correspondence they dont have even a basic knowledge about library science and also they do know about the classification scheme. The fourth reason is communication. Most of the librarians are poor in communication. Above all we dont have any cooperation among us. We dont have any association to fight with the government. Whatever the association we have , they are not doing anything for the upliftment of library professionals. When the librarian have not enough knowledge , first he or she will be paid less, then they will put one faculty incharge for the library.

Dear Sivakumar Sir,

I agree most of your points, except one. That is about the correspondence study. Some University centers may have like that  pitfalls. First you enquire correctly about the correspondence classes conducted by different universities. Don't locate this matter in a particular location. Be Professional.....

Dear Sri Vipin Pande,

Thanks for your post & for addressing an important issue before the members of this forum. I absolutely agree with most of Sri B. Shivakumar's comments. However, I would like to add a few lines. the bare fact is that sheer majority of numbers of faculty members. In any institution, the number of teaching staff is many fold more than the number of Library professionals. As such, they can always overrule a librarian. The heads of institutes basically belong to teaching category only and their support mostly go to them.

Besides, there is no denying that the profiles of Librarians are often less illustrious than those of teaching staff. So naturally, a librarian often remains rather Lukewarm & timid in approach during any presentation in any meeting while many of the teaching staff are seen to be extremely aggressive seemingly purpusively to keep the librarian frightened. On the other hand, the librarians often not wanting to be targeted by populous teaching staff and for lack of self esteem and personality do not even try to exert authority.

Sincerely,

Siddhartha S. Ray, Calcutta

Dear Sri B. Sivakumar,

thanx for sharing your ideas.i am agree with your first point, library professionals may be less to compete faculty members when they have less experiences, bt when they have enough exp. they can compete others if they have done their duties in the past sincerely....i think library professionals can compete any one. ...Correspondence is not the big issue... i think IGNOU is one of the best university in india and asia who has best syallabus..communication is the personal ability...we cant say most the librarians have poor communication skill........

Dear mr. siddharth shankar ray,

Thanx for sharing your valuable suggestions. All the faculties are of different disciplines... there field is not interfered by the faculty members of other field,,,,why our field is interfered.........i agree with u on this point that head of the institutions support to teaching faculty bcoz of teaching category....bt questions are arising from your this logic, where we are? why we not count in teaching category????????as we have the same qualification and scale..........why are we frightening???????

Dear Sri Vipin Pande,

Thank you so very much for being patient enough to go through my some what lengthy narrative. In reply to your query and for some of the other posts, let me tell you very politely yet frankly that in real sense & as per social entity, teachers and librarians are two distinctly different cadres of service holders.

There is hardly any argument that if we have a marriageable daughter and we have to choose from an Assistant Professor in a University with MA & Ph.D & an Assistant Librarian in the same university with n MA+M.Lib.Sc. & Ph.D, in spite of being Library professionals, as a father of the bride in 99% cases we shall chose the Assistant Professor knowing fully well that both enjoy same pay scales, promotional prospects and service tenure and an Assistant Librarian having more academic degrees (two Master Degrees)is more qualified. Ironically, the same thing reflects in academic committees.

I have gone through some other posts where the supremacy of the teaching staff have been debated. My question to them is: if we have options to chose service of an Assistant Librarian in a University and an Assistant Professor in the same university which one should we chose?

My intention is not to demean my profession (at least for the sake of sheer gratitude because it has been providing me Dal-Chawal for so many years!!

But my point is, we must admit the reality and as I feel, we should have our respect to the profession, we should not be ashamed to call ourselves LIBRARIAN. I admit that in places where a Librarian has better professional profile than research/teaching staff, there are instances where he/she is certainly made prey out of jealousy. Because it is equally true that while teaching/research staff are often regarded as ASSETS of the institutions, in banking terms there exist many NON-PERFORMING ASSETS too. (in some Scientific Research establishments there is an unwritten norm to transfer such NON-PERFORMING people to libraries or which are more fashionably called Knowledge Resource Centres!! & unfortunately in  several cases, these fellows armed with the shield of so called scientific fraternity often becomes the head of the Library without knowing the basic grammar of Librarianship!! )

Another vice  is what Sri C. Radhkrishnapillai mentioned. This is unwillingness to share platforms!

Indeed it is bitter yet true fact and for this, we, the seniors in the profession are to be blamed mostly!

It is rather unfortunate that the idea of Mentoring the young people is extremely rare in our profession. May be it is because most of us are out & out professional minded or (arguably) it may even be a fact that most of us lack this ability!! But whatever the reason be, the profession is affected.

I hope I could explain the issue adequately.

Sincerely,

Siddhartha S. Ray, Calcutta

Yes, unwillingness.

Sir,

Very relevant question. Librarians are not considered as par with the teachers. If a Librarian has more competent than a teacher, but he doesn't get the attention like a teacher. Our traditional attitude towards teachers are very high than other profession. Other professions are getting more citations than librarians from the society. The authors are not interested to include or narrate a story about library profession in their works .Because the in-attraction  of the profession. The majority of  librarians are lazy and incompetents.Teachers are not ready to accept Librarians par with them , if they have more knowledge than them. They are not ready to share the platforms.

ACADEMIC PERSON DONOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE LIBRARIAN IN THE COMMITTEES BECAUSE THEY KNOW VERY WELL  IF LIBRARIAN ENTER IN THE FIELD OF ACADEMIC COUNCILS AND COMMITTEES THEN WHO WILL ASK THEM BECAUSE LIBRARIAN IS MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE THEN TEACHERS

Thanks to all my respective friends who shared their valuable ideas and thoughts with us....i also thanks to whom who have read this discussion bt due to their busy schedule they could not comment...thanks to all...
