Is it the time to go for 5 years Library and Information Science course?

Dear professionals,

Do you think that it is the time to redesign our course. The subject coverage is so vast, that 2 years course can not fully equip the students. Like other subjects our subjects should also be given as a subject in UG level, then 2 years PG. But some senior professionals & teachers opposing it.

Dear  Apurba

You can consult my following Knol for this purpose. I published it on  Sep 10, 2009 5:06 PM over the web.

Barman, Badan; Nair, Preethi. Three Years BLISc and Two Years MLISc Degree Programme:A Proposal [Internet]. Version 38. Knol. 2010 Feb 19. Available from: https://badanbarmanknol.wordpress.com/

The above article was even written before launching of the five years course by the Calcutta University.

To be in simple, I am strongly in favour of three year BLISc and two years MLISc programme (total five years). It should be an integrated course.

My suggestion for you- dont go by the words of the old generation. We will build our own future.

Note: I am sure this topic of discussion is going to be one of the hot topic for this month. My Thumbs Up for this in advance.

Assam College Library Association (ACLA) should take active steps in this regard. They may give a proposal to government of Assam for introducing 3 years BLISc in degree level.

It will incresse the job opportunity for us. as college will aslo opt for lecturers.
but it will be opposed from DLIS, GU

Calcutta university started it after long fight.
There are number of college in India which run LIS course in degree level

I also think the the prospect of LIS profession surely can be increased by introducing 3 years degree course. But the course curricula should be refined and rescheduled so that they meet the challenge of information age rather than staying stagnant with the traditional concepts.
Sir, if course will be 5 years then what will the structure of course?

Library and information science course is a professional course which brings efficiency, competency, confidence and leadership in personnels.Multidimentional and infinite growth of knowledge library science schools are gaining much importance these day. After graduation or post graduation, students have taken admission in Bachelor of Library and information Science and completed the course successfully, after that he can eligible for librarian post in KVS/NVS/colleges and university level .those students have completed master of library science and information science ,have go for higher level job i.e. higher institution/ library and information centers. The development of technology and their application to storage, processing and dissemination of information and others the fast growth of subjects and increasing demand for specific information have great challenges to information scientists. Today libraries are adopting modern technologies for housekeeping operation. So the curriculum of library science courses has been changed for the present context of modern libraries. For this various types of courses in library and information science conducted at school, college and university level. In Deptt of Lib. & Information science, Aligarh Muslim University, Late Padamshri Prof.S. Bashiruddin introduced "Bachelor of Library Science" in 1958-59 with full time lecturers for the first time in the country. The certificate course was discontinued in 1968-69.Subsequently,"Master of Library Science" was introduced in 1970-71. Another pioneering step taken by the Department in the year 1986-87 was the introduction of Library Sciences as a subsidiary subject at B.A. level in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences. Like AMU, various professional colleges i.e. Govt Politechnique colleges in Bihar,Punjab etc have conducted three year full time  course in library and information science. In India there are various university have conducted two year integrated course in lib & Information science but these are less. Also redesign the course and running the programme according to time. but It should be started whole institutions in our country.

Akhtar Hussain

apurvaji its a nice step but before going for 5 year course i told you my experience we started three year course at makhanlal chaturvedi university, bhopal but unfortunately ugc did not recognise the course so students are in trouble.so please think all the aspect before starting the course

3 yera scourse should be started in Colleges only, not by university .

the criteria should be 12th pass as other subjects.

when LIS will be a full fledged subject in graduation, then only it can be included in ICS exam.

Under the affiliation of Bharathidasan University, Bishop Heber College Trichirapalli, Tamilnadu used to have 3 years "Bachelor" program in library science, when they decided to start "Masters" the undergraduate program was withdrawn. I was one among the last batch students who studied Bachelors in Library Science plus two year Masters, continuously 5 years of Library Science Program. Based on my personal experience, I would like to share the positive & negative of studying 5 years of library science.

 Positives:

  • You are learned enough, studied extensively all the areas of the library science.
  • You are bold enough to enter into the job markets even as you are a fresher.
  • Obviously, during these years you will be sent for internship programs and training in libraries. These things give confident to take higher level position for a fresher. (I was appointed as a head, librarian for an Indo-Japanese Institution, my first job!)
  • You have a wider scope of library job markets, circulation to cataloguing & administration to automation.

Negatives:

  • If the program structure is not well designed you will be bored enough of studying 5 years, repeatedly studying some papers, repeatedly doing cataloguing  & classification practices, seeing same faculty staff for five years.
  • You may even get discouraged by other Major students seeing you with DDC schedules for all the years and when they ask this question "What is there to study 5 years about library?" Believe me! this happened several times to me.
  • The major drawback is because you are entering to library science directly after your 12 std, you will not have knowledge on any other majors. So you are eligible only for library jobs.
  • For some jobs BA + BLIsc or Bsc + Blisc needed. One more major is must for some jobs, this case you are not eligible, and again need to study 3 years to have an another major!.

Considering both positives and negatives, if you want to shine in library jobs studying 5 years of library science is the best!!

Sir suppose, if the five year course starts then what will the guarantee of jobs ,where will the passouts will go when they have no job options except library job,and as you know the condition of jobs.an additional paper of Library can be added with Bachelor degree which all streams students can do

The job prospect will be same as now.

in 5 years course, it may be 3 +2 years or integrated.

after 3 years students will be elligible for any graduate level post like other subject and BLIS

fut main thing is that, then BLIS should be demolished after graduation

Very good idea. No doubt it will increase the status and prospect of Library and Information student. But it will be recognized by the UGC first. So the about syllabus and course structure could be think later.

Dear Professionals

I completly agree with your opinion about 5 years integreted course in LIS, but it should be recognise by the UGC.
