Dear Mr. Bharat,

After deciding the area of subject for research you need to search for related literatures on the subject of your research. Draw a clear picture of your research by taking the following headings of the research proposal.

Title of the research

Introduction

General statement of problem

Statement of problem (Specific)

Leterature review

Aim and objectives of the study

Research Questions

Hypothesis

Scope and limitations

Materials and methods to be use (Statistical tools)

Significance of the study

Plan of the study

Reference

The above heading may very, as your guide may suggest for some alteration.

Regards,

Thank you sir

Dear Friend,.

You can prepare or write a research proposal in same manner as you prepare an article for any conference or many journal.

It will be the answer of following simple questions

1. WHAT you want to do?

2.WHY you want to do .....means what is the objective of your project?

3.HOW would you like to carry the project......ie what would be methodology you like to adopt to carry or accomplish your goal.

As soon as you get the answers of above mentioned questions, it would be easy to chalk out the limitations and scope of the project.

During the project what would be your assumptions or you can say HYPOTHESIS...you can estimate now.

Wish you Very best for your bright future........

Very good Ms Dey.  I liked your brief but precise explanation.

thank you Sir

Dear Sri Sondarva,

Your mail is quite interesting and you have addressed an issue which is an important question to many young and aspiring professionals. On the onset, I would like to mention about three books which helped me a lot. They are :

1) How to Do Research by Nick Moore

2) These and Dissertations

both published from Library Association (in 1980s)

 and the third is

How to write and publish a Scientific Paper  by Robert A. Day published from ISI Press (in 1980s). This book was published by Cambridge University Press (India) during 2003.

In case the research topic is on studies of Scientific Discipline, there is an excellent book by Barbara Gastel (ISI Press) entitled Presenting Science to the Public

However, I must admit, that all the above mentioned books I bought & read were during 1985 to 1995!!

I have mentioned the books because they will provide you an excellent insight of analyzing issues is a very systematic way.

Well, Besides books, practically speaking, it will be only particular researcher to write his/her own research proposal. During this discourse following issues are of great importance.

I should add  in this respect that what I am suggesting is a general comment on writing a research proposal and not necessarily Ph.D. proposal. My comment is based upon my personal practice.

a) Identification of the issue (What I want to do really?)

(please note, I have not written topic) A detailed, clear concept of the issue the researcher intends to address is a must. This is extremely important. in case s/he take up an issue impulsively or without thinking mossible minute details, the person will be in great danger!!

b) Importance or relevancy of the issue: (Why do I want to do this?)

The researcher must know and clarify this aspect;  because, during writing of the introduction to the proposal, s/he has to explain the importance to highlight the merit of the work.

c) Scope and limitation of the Study.

In case one wants to restrict his/her studies within a particular place or among particular group of peoples, or for a specific period of time, that should be clearly mentioned in the beginning.

d) Requirements of inputs and ingredients (or What in hand needed to proceed?)

(This constitutes to Materials and Methods)

This describes the researcher's insight; that is, how clearly s/he has thought of the issue; how minutely s/he has identified the possible needs well in advance. This enables the approving authority to understand about the ground-level knowledge of the researcher to conduct the research. I think, you may require some example to explain the issue properly, Well, suppose you want to pursue work on Bibliometric/Scientometric studies of a particular subject. Now, you must need the following materials: (1) Bibliographic databases on the subject concerned.(2) Citation indexes like SCI/SSCI/SCOPUS/JCR etc. In case you do not have access to any of the materials, it will be impossible for you to do the work. (By the way, we often come across articles/studies on Citation Study which are actually mere accounts of  Referencing Patterns of published literature!!) The researcher also gets an opportunity to explain the nature of the work. Does the work require survey, if yes, the sample size; Whether through Questionnaire or with/without interview, for interviews, whether only audio or videos are also included etc. for questionnaire based survey whether the questionnaire are open or closed or a combination of both etc. etc.

I understand that the reply is getting pretty lengthy but unfortunately, otherwise i can not explain the issue.

e) Analysis of the issue or what angle(s) you want to focus

f) A  short discussion of existing literature if any including "to what extent" the present

work will be different.

I believe that I could give you an insight of writing a Research proposal and hope this will be of help to you.

Sincerely,

Siddhartha Shankar Ray
