What steps should be taken by the lis professionals to improve the status of the profession ?

Most of the lay men still used to think that librarian has nothing more to do. Again today most of the surveys have shown that due to internet the percentage of the user of the libraries have reduced a lot and the profession is at a risk. So, what steps should be taken by the lis professionals to improve the status of the profession ?

yes Rajpal Singh Rajpurohit sir you said "Lazawab"
I like the topic of this discussion very much coz while on knowing the replies of the professionals , I also wanna say somthing from myside. i m agreed with Dr. Pachauri wtever he told as we have to maintain our dignity and keep always in our mind that we r the best....etc. But here i m agreed with the Suresh sir too as he is saying that no 1 alone can maintain the atatus of our profession. Coz it is not possible in every institute or the places where we r working to do work as we r thing...there r lots of problems we r facing to show our talent and superiority. In this situation i wuld like to ask with my seniors and the the experts that wht shud we do??? plz dnt take it otherwise and try to give ur valuable comments.
Yes its very true. Due to lack of the support of the authority we cannt able to put our plans, efforts and talents into action. Many in cases library is treated as not so busy area. Even if we do provide the high technology oriented services, administration underestimates those some times( from my practical experience) and again some superiors dont show interest to spend much amount in libraries and then unwillingly we have to remain in laps of technology. So it really becomes a challenging profession and there is a strong need to generate awarness among people that yes we librarians can also best and unique and we are now so accustomed with the technology and search strategies rather than a custodian of books unlike abroad.

Madam Anita,I have raised this point on LIS link two or three times. At last there is no solution we again return to the role of Library Associations and all the respected LIS professors and senior Librarians to introspect thier role, dutie and responsibilties towards the profession. Their STOMACH are full so they do not think about the proffesion.

with regards

 N K Pachauri

oops sorry instead of Kishore Singarkar sir i mentioned Suresh.....and istead of status i hv wrote atatus. Thinking shud be there as a place of thing.
Thank u

Dear Solanki Madam,

Thank you very much for agree with my statement.

Theriotically all things we can share as well as dicuss but practically, it is not easy for impliments. This not only topics. according to me this topic can be refection/mirror of what have their status of the professional each.

Hello Friends

I regard all the professional view what I think this profession is like a dirty pond these day. Every one wants to go ahead by hoot and crook.  Every one can not get the top position and there are nothing a chance to go ahead and I hope that If policy will not change within few year's no one to move this profession.

We often see “May I help you” sign in many places even in libraries, It is indeed attracts people to walk towards the sign having in mind to get some sort of help out there..  Similarly if the library professional wear an ‘attitude tag’ called “I care for you” the result in long run would be phenomenal lift for the librarian status.  Every library has customers, if customers sense this person so called ‘librarian’ can help & solve my need, then he/she definitely look for you once step inside the library.

All we need to do is just to take little care about our customers, develop interest to know about them little bit about their "interest and want" and serve them accordingly, give them surprise!  You may not be able to do for the whole community but you can start to learn about your “most regular” customers and show them in action as “I care for you”.  Believe me! If we all do this soon customers will bring significant status reorganization for librarians.

I know, there are many departments inside the library but “customer care” is the Interface!

To be frank, in my opinion our profession is at a serious risk.

* Public library funding is decreasing throughout the world.

* Library users all over the world are also decreasing.

* Users build a tendency towards screen (IPod, IPad, IPhone, TV, Nuke, Kindle) in place of printed books.

* The computer science professionals as well as others are grabbing the opportunities of LIS Professionals.

So,

* The Library should try to generate their own fund.

* E-Book reading devices should be an integral part of the library.

* The library professionals should give much emphasis on emerging technologies.

Mr. Badan I think  today concept of library is changing and their role is increasing day by day. Yes computer professionals are grabbing the opportunities of LIS professionals but I want to say that librarians are librarians they can't be equal to Computer specialist. In the research institutes Computer profesional are required as a Scientist.

The second point of fund it is decreasing day by day yes it is correct but public libraries are the torch bearers of the society so Government shoud think for the improvment in this side. The role of our LIS bodies and society also should be   positive and effective in this direction.

Yes library users are decreasing because we are very much depend upon Computer, internet, TV Etc. so  we should make our library much resourceful with latest technologies. But I think Printed  books are still very useful  and will remain  useful forever. Printed books are very essential for students and teachers.

So the libraries and users are changing but  we should look new environmet for development of libraries.

Thanks Mr. Badan, it is a very serious topic of debate so please discuss the same issue on LIS LINK.
